Game Changer

Golf was first played sometime in the Middle Ages in Scotland, but it has clearly evolved as technology, equipment, rules, and golf course design have changed. Although golf didn’t find widespread popularity in the U.S. until the early 20th century, it made up for lost time quickly and remains a global fan favorite on television — particularly when it comes to major tournaments.
Now, golf has taken its next evolutionary step, thanks to three well-known names. The TGL (“Tomorrow Golf League”), founded by golfing legends Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy along with visionary sports executive Mike McCarley, represents a mash-up of innovation and tradition. The trio created TGL with the goal of reinvigorating the sport for a new generation by combining the classic game with modern technology and entertainment.
A FRESH NEW VISION
The TGL grew out of a single ambitious idea: to make golf more accessible, engaging, and enjoyable for fans of all ages. Woods, who has won 15 major championships and has a record-breaking 82 wins on the PGA Tour, saw TGL as a way to bring the sport he loves to a broader audience. McIlroy, who claimed his 15th PGA Tour victory in 2019, signed on to be part of the ground-breaking project. Then, they joined with sports media pro McCarley, who played a pivotal role in transforming Golf Channel into a leading sports media company in the 2010s. The trio formed TMRW Sports in 2022 and set out to create a league that would captivate the attention and imaginations of golf enthusiasts around the world.
The TGL features six teams, each representing a different city: Los Angeles (CA) Golf Club, Atlanta (GA) Drive Golf Club, Boston (MA) Common Golf Club, Jupiter (FL) Links Golf Club, New York Golf Club, and the Bay Golf Club (San Francisco Bay Area, CA). Each team is composed of top PGA Tour golfers, including Woods and McIlroy.
The teams compete in a season-long tournament, and matches are held at the state-of-the-art SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The venue was specifically designed to host this unique blend of traditional and simulated golf, and the matches air live on ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPN+ in the U.S. The inaugural season, which kicked off on Jan. 7, 2025, has already drawn fans from all corners of the globe.
SAME GAME, NEW FORMAT
One of the most striking aspects of the TGL is its innovative format. Players tee off from a mat into a large simulator screen that recreates the fairway, rough, and sand traps of a traditional golf course. The immersive nature of the experience helps fans feel as though they are sharing the course with their favorite players.
After teeing off, the action transitions to a 3,800-square-foot green that sits atop a rotating turntable. This setup enables players to putt in real life, adding an element of unpredictability and skill to the game.
The TMRW Sports team used three world-class golf course design companies to create 30 original courses for the TGL. Each course starts in the virtual world, with players taking shots into the screen, and end in the real world on the green inside SoFi Center. For each match, 15 of the holes are selected and placed in a unique order to form that night’s course.
BRINGING FANS CLOSER
Another unique aspect of the matches is that, as they are played, fans are given an unprecedented level of access to the players. Each golfer wears a microphone, which allows viewers to hear their thoughts, strategies, and reactions in real-time. This intimate connection between players and fans has quickly become one of the league’s defining features. Fans can hear the camaraderie and friendly banter between teammates, as well as feel the pressure and intensity of competition.
The TGL’s commitment to fan engagement goes beyond just the matches; the league has embraced social media and digital platforms to create a vibrant online community. Fans can follow their favorite teams and players on various channels, participate in interactive polls and quizzes, and even join virtual watch parties to experience the thrill of the game with fellow enthusiasts.
In just a short time, the TGL has introduced an exciting angle to golf that is perfect for engaging younger audiences. It has already made a significant impact on the world of sports, with commentators and other players weighing in on the new approach to the game. With its blend of tradition and innovation, the league is poised to become a staple of the golfing calendar for years to come. And, as the TGL continues to grow in popularity, it will continue redefining the boundaries of what golf can be.
